Minister of Sports Witnesses the Opening of the African Cup and Arab Triathlon Championship in Sharm El Sheikh

Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, the Minister of Youth and Sports, witnessed the opening of the African Cup and Arab Triathlon Championship, one of the qualifying tournaments for the Paris 2024 Olympics, which is taking place from May 19th to 21st in Sharm El Sheikh, with the participation of 200 athletes representing 50 countries.

Sobhy welcomed the delegations and participating countries to their second home, Egypt, stating that Egypt has become a destination for major international and continental championships due to its infrastructure, facilities built according to international standards, excellent accommodation hotels, modern road networks and transportation systems, as well as organizational and administrative expertise. He emphasized the significant support that Egyptian sports have received from the political leadership, which has reflected on the achievements of Egyptian sports and the number of tournaments hosted by Egypt in recent times.

The Minister of Sports affirmed the importance of the African Championship hosted by the beautiful city of Sharm El Sheikh as one of the qualifying tournaments for the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris. He highlighted that Egypt has many champions in the triathlon, including athlete Basmla Elsalamony, who participated in the previous Olympics in Tokyo as the first Egyptian and Arab female athlete to compete in this sport. He also mentioned the presence of distinguished athletes such as Fatma Hegazy, the African champion, and Mohamed Gaber, a player of our national team.

On the other hand, Major General Ahmed Nasser, the President of the Egyptian, Arab, and African Triathlon Union, expressed his gratitude to Minister of Sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhy for his presence at the opening of the championship and his support for the tournament and the triathlon union, noting that such support is customary and not surprising from the Minister of Sports.
