History made as Giana Farouk wins karate bronze at Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is set to carry the flag of Egypt

The Egyptian Karate queen Giana Farouk was chosen by the Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC), headed by Eng. Hesham Hattab, to carry the Egyptian flag at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 


The decision of the Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC) came as a result of the remarkable achievement by Giana Farouk after winning Egypt first-ever karate Olympic medal after claiming bronze. As Giana Farouk is the first Egyptian, Arab and African female athlete to win an Olympic medal in karate, so that she will carry the Egyptian flag in the Olympics closing ceremony in acknowledgment of her historic achievement.


Giana Farouk became the first Egyptian female athlete to win a medal in karate at the Olympics, and the second Arab athlete after the medal given to Jordan by its athlete Abdul Rahman Al-Masatafa in the karate kumite 61kg event.


This is the 36th Olympic medal in Egyptꞌs history, and the fourth medal Egypt has won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic, equaling the number of Egyptꞌs medals in the 2012 London Olympics and exceeding the number of medals in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
